Homeplace Ranch is situated in Alberta's high cattle country, in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Called Paradise by the First Nations people and promoted as the Last Best West, homesteads were built here from around 1905.
The ride ::
Mac and his family have been guiding for over 30 years and enjoy helping their guests understand a way of life for which Southern Alberta is known. Guests are encouraged to share the traditions, heritage, recreation and natural beauty that constitute this unique lifestyle. Homesteaded in 1912, photographs and artefacts of the original owners are still displayed and many log buildings from that period are currently in use.
The foothills and mountain area of the Homeplace Ranch were and remain cattle and horse country. Stock was wintered at the home ranch and herded to high country pastures for the summer. During your stay you'll have a chance to ride these areas and cross an Indian trail that was once used by the Stoney Band. Riding varies from mountain valleys to high foothills, crossing numerous streams, mountain meadows and old Indian trails. This type of terrain allows you the chance to periodically trot or canter if desired.
Most of the horses, American Quarter Horses, Thoroughbreds and mixed breeds, are homebred and their welfare is of paramount importance to the wranglers.
You can choose from half day and full day rides, leaving time to explore the surrounding area. Trips by car to Banff, Calgary, Spruce Meadows or Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump can easily be done, using the ranch as your home base.
The ranch can accommodate up to 14 guests in comfortable en suite rooms. Guests share a Western style living and dining area. Meals are served family style, so you get to know everyone. Coffee and snacks are always available.
